Letter to Port of Cork Opposing Proposed LNG Facility

In March 2023, Not Here Not Anywhere, along with 20 other civil society organisations, sent a letter to the Port of Cork to oppose a proposed floating LNG facility in Cork harbour. This deal poses a major threat to our environment and climate goals and we call the Port of Cork to reconsider its decision. LNG is sold as a 'cleaner' fossil fuel but don't be fooled - it still releases harmful gases that have a higher warming potential than coal over a 20-year horizon. As UN Secretary António Guterres has warned 'there is no room for new fossil fuel infrastructure' to stay below 1.5°C. Not only does this LNG facility pose a risk to our climate but it also puts our local marine life and coastal communities in danger while harming US-based communities due to fracking in the supply chain. It’s inappropriate for the Port of Cork to sign this agreement in the midst of an energy security review, in which a core finding stated that market-based LNG projects would not provide energy security. Our environment's health should be prioritised over profits for Pilot LNG. In 2017, due to pressure from the climate movement, the Port of Cork stopped its partnership with the US-based NextDecade LNG. We now call on them to do the right thing once again by ending this harmful project and ensuring a clean energy future for Cork, Ireland and our planet.
