Activists launch LNG Free Pledge with TDs and Senators alongside Bill sponsor, Neasa Hourigan, T.D.

Tuesday 22 February, Dublin.

The LNG Free Bill, launched last week by Green Party TD, Neasa Hourigan and grassroots climate activist group Not Here Not Anywhere (NHNA), was today presented to TDs and Senators. There was cross-party representation in support of the campaign, including members of the Green Party, Sinn Féin, People Before Profit, Social Democrats and Labour, among others. The Bill would stop the granting of planning permission for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals in Ireland. Deputy Hourigan and NHNA members highlighted an urgent need for the Bill: for the climate, for local communities, and for Ireland’s energy security.

Activist, Míde Power of Not Here Not Anywhere said:

“With this campaign comes the recognition that LNG is a crucial climate action issue, and we acclaim the cross-party support for this Bill. To keep 1.5C alive we must avoid developing LNG infrastructure in Ireland.”

Among 30 allied environmental and social justice groups who support the campaign, member of South Texas Environmental Justice Network Emma Guevara said:

“We need to take action and make sure we’re keeping our future in mind and this Bill gives the government that opportunity. This Bill must be passed in order to internationally stymie the effects of dangerous LNG, oil, and gas imports and exports. As someone whose community is directly impacted by these projects, it is imperative to remember that the effects of these projects can be communally and ecologically devastating to the surrounding populations. We, as a global community, need to globally decrease our emissions and move towards renewable energy, and this Bill is a step towards that.”
